I know this is an old video and my comment will be lost but your description of HDR is totally incorrect. You say it allows for brighter pixels - this is not true. It allows for more variation between the bright and dark - it does not affect the maximum brightness or contrast ratio of an image.

Hi, about Dolby Vision, I tried to shoot the same clip with DV on first and then with DV off and I have to say that of course the overall image quality and colors are much better with DV on. The only thing I noticed that seems pretty odd to me is that high lights seems be clipped much more with DV on. For example, I shoot from the inside my room and outside the windows everything is white (clipped). Then, the same video with DV off has some details outside. I'm not watching the videos on computers or TV but just by my phone12. Do you know why is that? Can it be something related to the auto color correction that the phone applies? I am a filmmaker so I know what I am talking about, it's just seems very strange to me that the highlights with Dolby Vision on my phone are much more clipped that standard video. I also tried to import the original iphone 12 file into DaVinci resolve and the footage looks identical, without over exposing. I am starting to think that my iphone auto convert the footage in 709.

Just as I commented in the iPhone 12 video, actually HDR photos (and raw photos from a camera) look exactly like that overexposed take at the beginning when viewed on an SDR display before any tonemapping. Moreover, there are digital mirrorless cameras capable of displaying the raw photos via HDMI in all of their high dynamic range on a HDR capable display. Canon M50 for example - though I haven't yet tested that because I can't get the damned microHDMI adapter lol

Unless I'm mistaken, DaVinci Resolve 17 supports Dolby Vision. That point may be moot if one doesn't have an HDR reference monitor like the Sony Trimaster HX 31" 4K HDR Master Monitor. This puppy runs somewhere around $35,000, give or taken a few grand. On the other hand, ASUS has made it a bit more affordable model. Their ProArt Display 32" 4K HDR Professional Monitor www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ProArt-Display-PA32UCX-PK/ is somewhat more affordable, coming in at $4.428.20 (B&H Photo). It's Dolby Certified, too. That price is well above my paygrade, and I'd be very hard-pressed to justify the expense . . . to my wife, anyway.

So I downloaded your test videos and played them on my non-hdr display and did not see overexposure like in the beginning of this video. Then, i played it on an hdr display, which is a MacBook Air from 2019 (apple says its compatble with HDR) and saw it was brighter, but i think thats because it has a brighter screen. is this supposed to happen? Looking at the quicktime inspecter and saw that it said 10-bit, HDR, and dolby vision. I am very confused...

A minor quibble / clarification: it's not that 8 bit colour doesn't exactly provide enough "wiggle room". (I'm clarifying one sense of that, and agreeing with you if you meant the other!) A scale of 1 to 10 describes the same range as it does if you allow 2 decimal places of accuracy. Stretching the scale up or down by an extreme degree (and beyond what HDR corrections normally do) would result in visible banding in gradients like skies. Where 1 to 10 was sufficient, when the extremes are stretched, the jump between 8 and 9 is stretched, so you see a jump between say, "very light blue" and "light blue" in the sky portion of a photo. So, more bits (and therefore more values) adds "decimal points", rather than range.

Recording in HDR will offer more creative freedom (by capturing more detail) when it comes to color grading-even if you're delivering in SDR. But you'll have to know what you're doing. If you plan to deliver to an SDR platform, and you don't plan to work any post-production movie magic into your video, then just shoot SDR. : )

Try this: 1) You are correct that you need to start with a Wide Gamut HDR library. Importing HDR content into a Standard (SDR) library will look wrong. 2) When you create a project, set your timeline format to "Wide Gamut HDR - Rec.2020 HLG". (note, HLG, not PQ). The Dolby Vision videos on iPhone 12 use an HLG representation. That should solve your first issue and the footage should look correct. 3) now when you've edited your footage, use the following to export: File > Send to Compressor > New Batch. In Compressor, click on the small "Add" button in the middle ("Setting" line) and choose the "Apple Devices 4K (HEVC 10-bit)" option. Pick your desired output location if necessary and click "Start Batch". Boom. You should have a 10-bit HLG 2020 HEVC video file that you can upload to IDdown. (Note: it's also possible to set your timeline format to Rec.2020 PQ as you did, but then if you import HLG footage like the videos from iPhone 12, you need to apply an "HDR Tools" effect to those clips and select "HLG to PQ - Rec.2100" in order to apply to appropriate conversion). Side Note : You Can Not Do True Colour Grading of HDR Video Footage on Premier Pro Because It is Still Bound to Rec.709. Only DaVinci Resolve and FCPX Can Do That ❗

Yeah! You totally can. You just have to make sure, while you're editing, to keep everything under 100% of the peak luminance of Rec. 709. I always use color scopes and zebras to let me know if something is over-exposing. Hopefully that helps!

Why you didn't upload this video in hdr?

  • Computer Clan

    Computer Clan

    5 bulan yang lalu

Many reasons. I don't even know where to start. : p I'll try to be brief… 1. IDdown's implementation of HDR is not that great. 2. Most people would not be able to view it properly. 3. I don't have an HDR camera (aside from the iPhone) which records with an HDR transfer function and HDR metadata. 4. I do not have an HDR workflow for color correction and tone mapping (yet). 5. I do not have an HDR reference monitor for post-production (the cheapest solution is about $6,000). 😅

I know Apple doesn’t make all of its camera features available to developers. I haven’t checked yet, but do you know if they are making HDR recording available to third-party apps? It would be nice for apps like Filmic.

  • Computer Clan

    Computer Clan

    5 bulan yang lalu

Oh yeah, Filmic never did bring that to life… weird. ANYWAY! I know Filmic currently does not support any type of Apple's HDR implementation, and I have not heard about Dolby Vision being accessible to other developers. Since it's a proprietary format, I'm not sure how Apple will go about doing that, but maybe they'll figure something out. I'll keep an eye on that! I hope they can at least open up the 10-bit HLG HDR to developers because HLG is an open standard. Heck, Apple is going to make their ProRAW functions available to devs, so hopefully they can work something out with Dolby! Thanks for watching : ) Any other questions, just let me know.

Vimeo and IDdown do support it. I haven't tested Vimeo yet, but I have tested IDdown. It's a bit wonky. For example, on Chrome (at least Chrome on Mac) if you watch an HDR video on a non-HDR display, you can't turn the HDR mode off. Everything just looks blown out. : c

Just video. However, soon Apple will release ProRAW, which lets you capture RAW photography combined with the computational benefits of Apple's camera software. I'm not sure what depth they'll support, but it's probably 10 or 12-bit.

Great Video! As Apple said in the iPhone 12 Keynote, you can stream your Dolby Vision videos shot on iPhone 12 via Air Play on any compatible Dolby Vision TV using Apple TV 4k. I have not been able to get this work on my 2020 LG Cx OLED. Any ideas why? Is it a software issue with the TV encoding the video file or is it to much data to simply stream a Dolby Vision video using Air Play? Thanks!

  • Computer Clan

@Sharan25 But HLG still looks reeeeaaaallly good. I think the backward compatibility it offers is a fair trade-off for anything else it might be lacking. But I may be a tad biased since I've only dabbled in the HLG space.

All jokes aside, a basic (likely the cheapest) setup for me to correctly grade in HDR is $6,000. That's on the LOW-END. RIP. The good news is, prices will likely come down as this tech becomes more accessible. Apple is putting it in many people's pockets, so that's a big step.
