The iPhone 12 Cameras (from a Videographer's Perspective) - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk
Sains & Teknologi
The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera is the biggest jump in the iPhone's camera, yet. But what is Dolby Vision and Apple ProRAW? Can these features replace actual camera rigs? Krazy Ken, who is a videographer (shocker), weighs in.

UPDATE: I want to clarify that the Blackmagic camera I mentioned can, in fact, shoot HDR. I misspoke. It can shoot in high dynamic range (13 stops) but it doesn’t capture with HLG (hybrid gamma-log).
I was thinking of HDR photography (where multiple exposures are blended together) but that’s different; it just has a similar name. It’s also known as HDRi (high dynamic range imaging). I’ll cover more HDR-related topics in future episodes.

I got the iPhone 12 Pro with the graphite finish! The cameras are amazing, but they have a major issue: on the ultra wide camera, if you shot 4K60fps, when you tap anywhere to adjust the exosure, the camera starts to lag and stutter! This is present even on iOS 14.3. Have you noticed it Krazy Ken??
I want the mini. I’d like to have the extra camera features, but I’d rather have a smaller iPhone again.
HDR10 has fixed max/min values for the entire video. Dolby Vision has per frame max/min values for contrast. Newer revisions of the open source HDR has this now, but Dolby was first.
vedio hdr 10 bit,422or 420?
😍😍
❤❤
Dude. Ladar??? I got this since mate 20 pro, I'm using mate 30pro now, ummatch performance. Samsung made it, garbage. I already see iPhone 12, garbage. The only thing it was and I miss is really the 10 bit
* dad joke alert * Why is the iPhone 12 banned in China? Shifting sensor chip.
Shift ois only in iphone 12pro max
Looking forward to your mobile to mobile camera comparisons but it looks like the 'war' between Mirrored pro and phons cameras is about to begin. I hope you also compare beyond mobile to mobile. The entire pro photo / Video world will tune in because you have cred. Many other reviewers flog their personal preferences (or habits) instead of just dealing with the facts and end results. Thanks again.
I’m currently starting out with editing tutorials ... and I really needed those tips !! Thanks
did anyone get the memo about what camera rig he is actually using?
If you do a review about the new iphones, a must do is: Be upset about not getting a charger brick in the box. 😂 Every reviewer did this.
Thank you for getting to the meat and potatoes of the camera
As someone who knows nothing about photos and camera systems, I thought this was a great, informative video.
can you do a video on wifi repeater to see if its a scam
Plot twist..he is sponsored by apple
*IPHONE PRO MAX IS THE BEST PHONE CAMERA IN THE WORLD*
If iPhone created a dslr I bet everyone would go for it
This was like watching blues clues for iPhones
Just waiting for the day that cameras will cover the whole back of phones

There's that one phone… which looks like that, but it's freaky looking. I fear it'd trigger trypophobia.
Im getting Iphone 12 pro max gold. upgrading from XS Max
As an aspiring IDdownr, the Pro Max will be getting a pre-order. It would make my life a heck of a lot easier while bringing higher quality for a tiny viewer base haha
Dolby vision is just in the pro maxs
I am whit Sony Xperia L4 2020 Model and it's with headphone jack
When the note20U thought has best camera in 2020 😂
11 pros naming as pro is BS...only 3 camera lens.. Not pro. 12 pro max is the first ''pro'' smartphone. Small lens with small sensor compared to dslr beats it due to computational photography esp smart hdr3 so skies don't turn white or cyan in many cases like direct to sun and sky and clouds looks natural with wide color gamut...and when people take photos indoor like restaurants during day or noon, the window doesnt show the outside as white like overexposed but in detail and natural same or better as we see with our eyes. Combining different ''best exposure in each object'' is the best. Soon computational photography in iPhones will beat even TopazLabs Denoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI etc. It also now has RAW. The LiDAR for focus esp seprating all objects like smallest strand of hair for bokeh and portrait night mode is great too and sensor shift (IBIS) plus EIS. I hope an app take advantage of LiDAR in photography like we can add virtual source of lighting at any part of the 3D scanned photo by LiDAR. We have our phones all the time but not DSLR. Moments and stories beats highest quality images and videos that are nonsense. Just look at viral videos and award winning films decade/s ago. Even sentimental black and white even damaged old photos without colors affect emotions than high end photography. Even the photo of cut arms and feet of children in rubber tree slavery decades ago sparked global condemnation of it and changed many lives. George Floyd death was captured using an iPhone and spark rallies and justice to many black lives and still going. Compare that to 99.99999999% high end photos and videos of DSLR with no views or less than 10 likes. Esp now, Dolby Vision 10bit (more control in colors than 8bit) HDR is now on iPhone esp 4k up to 60fps at 12 pro max. With Moment variable ND Filter and polariser and Moment app or Filmic Pro where shutter speed and ISO can be manually controlled....and DJI OSMO Mobile (waiting for osmo 5 to take advantage of magSafe rather than their osmo 4 with sticker that sucks....for the best stabilisation and techniques esp transitions.....also drone footages since iPhone is portable), photography and filmmaking will be in many more hands. Storytelling is like 99%value. Quality photos and videos is 1%value. But together is better. Anamorphic lens of Moment is also great. iddown.info/the/hYrZcdWf2biVgt0/video.html Great Technology is when it disappears in user experience so the user can focus on what he/she does. In this case, the story being told and moment being captured not ''photography and filmmaking with many stuff in DSLR aside from expensive lenses''. Also it's water and dust resitant so you can go in more places....not too limited with bulky heavy DSLR. iPhones have the most natural looking night mode. Now in 3 cameras (ultrawide, selfie and wide). The sound recording is also great. Any weakness, there's an accessory and app for that. The only thing I admire the most in 11 pros is the most accurate color of OLED screen and great at near black handling (best measure of processor of OLED panels) due to processor even if it has same OLED panel as Samsung which has different processor of OLED screens like a different cook and different cooking processing but same ingredients like same OLED panels but different processor. HDTVtests reviewed it. I'm sure the 12 pro max improved it esp 10bit hdr vs 8bit hdr. The best apps for editting are exclusive to iOS. The best apps in android has the equivalent app for iOS but with exclusive features and optimised. And all are far more secured in iOS . iddown.info/the/oZjQldqdydGVp7c/video.html .
Pacific blue is overrated just because it's new. Gold took the homerun this time I mean look at the frame. The gold color is finally back to yellow gold unlike in iPhone 8 to 11 Pro when they were rose gold
I need a smartphone that takes amazing pictures because I need them for work ,I had a p30 pro but was broken so I took a iPhone XR but is not the same , this time with iPhone 12 would be different ?If not is convenient come back to android (huawei or Samsung) ?let me know please 🙏

@Simon " it’s their profession, and hence; their “pro” tool." THIS is for me the point and only definition of "pro". Pro does not even mean, that you are good at something, it only means, that you make money from it and the same goes for your tools. If results are good enough, than the tools are "pro".
Simon

@Samuel Manny writing an essay for us, but have you ever stopped to consider what “pro” means? “professional”, meaning.. your profession. Most professional photographers will *not* be using a phone for their work, and if someone can manage to make a living off of photography made with their iphone 4 - so be it, it’s their profession, and hence; their “pro” tool. You shouldn’t just go around declaring stuff “not pro” because you don’t like the specs, same as how Apple shouldn’t go around declaring their devices “pro” because the specs are higher than their consumer-oriented lineup. Pro is not subjective, and it isn’t objective. It’s both. Subjective because it’s contextual, and objective because in that context, it’s a clear cut y/n. A good reason for companies to latch the “pro” tag to their devices is because.. it’s a simple way of conveying the idea of higher specs than another lineup they’re offering. It may as well be iPhone 12+, but that just wouldn’t work with the Max variant in naming scheme, hence “Pro” (as far as i’m concerned, i have no idea how Apple handles naming internally). An (x) number of lenses and their size doesn’t make a phone “pro”, and neither does anything else about them. I’m not disagreeing with your entire comment, which I breezed over mostly since it’s overly specific mostly, but i did want to tackle the first point you made because it’s an epidemic-sized misconception in the tech industry. “It’s titled pro so it’s for professions” - no it isn’t. It could be, but i bet there’s going to be photographers making better use of the 11 than non-photographers making use of the 11 pro. So if we can’t latch onto the results, nor specs, and our only tangible source of reference is contextual, most youtubers will prefer to use generalised terms that are often just factually half-correct at best, but that doesn’t matter because we soak that in and accept it for whatever reason. This one gets it though. Yes!

Never knew Toni Kroos is a tech reviewer
Thumbnail made me think he was saying the camera was using black magic. *facepalm*
Frankly I am still pissed off about the removal of the 3.5mm jack, especially on the larger phones (and ipad pro!) - still a massive dent on their reputation in my eyes.. so other manufacturers gimping their phones like sheep is hardly a plus point - but yeah, influence :/

I will wait, cause each time people are "wow" with the specs but at the end the photos are kinda... meh... I have a phone who got the previous Iphone that was super to take super duper photos but my Galaxy Note 8 get better shot, capture strangely more details and had less distortions, which is weird...

@Samuel Manny You're obviously under their spell. Apple is not easier to use. Especially their computers. Their ui is more complicated when you really look at it and when you need apps on their phone, they cost you money when their free on android. Some apps that someone may need are not available on the app store. They are anti consumer and bad for everyone, FACT!
Samuel Manny
6 bulan yang lalu
@Gregory Chin But Apple's business model is not based on impressing customers and being extraordinary esp with hardware....more on apps, software, ease of use, and integration of hardware+software+services+apps and encouraging third party hardware manufacturers to design accessories. Their design always look ordinary as they follow Dieter Rams principles of good design that good design should not be fashionable to allow for users to express itself. Thus boring designs for third party businesses to create accessories not available in extraodinary design android phones that changes designs all the time....not good for businesses of accessories. Android phone's business model is to impress people, be the first and most innovative, extraordinary with great hardware specs at lower prices but not much investments on apps and software and privacy+ security like Apple.

Umm, I wonder why fandroids don’t use headphone jacks anymore? Think about that! 💥👈🏾😂
Not to be rude but why does he act like the iphone is the holy grail of smartphone cameras.. they're great sure but they aren't paving the way to anything. Plenty of companies are doing the same things..and many are making new technologies too. They simply take ideas and polish them... They don't innovate.

@Computer Clan I guess your more towards companies " nudging " people into new mindsets. I guess you'd be right but I still struggle to believe that apple themselves is the main reason these things evolve the way they do, it's more to do with the community who blows up apples ideas despite how moving the ideas really are. Community have more influence picking specific topics of any brand more than the actual brand itself. I don't want a debate I'm just stating my opinion, not saying you'd debate it btw.

It's more than just the specs. Frankly, I've never heard of successful smartphone films or TV shows shot on other phones. I'm sure it's happened, but it must not be super mainstream. Like I talked about in the episode: influence.

We'll find out! From what I've seen, the post-processing tries to reduce the noise in the video, but sometimes you still get a bit of that splotchiness. However, with features like the bigger sensor, noise will be reduced right out of the gate! I'll know more once I can test everything side by side! Stay tuned… ; )

Great Technology is when it disappears in user experience so the user can focus on what he/she does. The best apps for editting are exclusive to iOS. me too, not gonna get that iPhone. Because I need a computer.
The headphone jack is one example but look at the the full touch display and multi touch... or the notch all of em are perfect examples..
What pisses me off fierce is the fact the Pro Max has exclusive features compared to the Pro. I don't mind paying I just don't want a phablet sized iPhone in my pocket all the time! I hate large phones; I'm apparently the only one but it's just too big...
I miss 3,5mm
I wish I can kiss Ken on the cheek :)
Sensor shift is the most attractive feature for those guys who like photography. The Pro Max is much stronger than Pro, I guess few people would choose Pro
Honestly I think when sensors can be miniaturized well enough to match the performance of larger cameras, we will also see cameras getting smaller minus the extra things that comes with a phone. Might be cheaper than the phone, or they'll be able to fit in extra things. And then the phone vs pro camera cycle starts again...

on the other hand those bigger sensors are in reality the biggest advantage of standalone cameras.
Black magic has "HDR" if you're shooting in RAW. Also, dolby vision doesn't mean it's better than cinema cameras, it just means those cinema cameras just didn't pay dolby the big bucks

As far as I’m concerned it’s a tiny little bit better than HDR10+ but I’m not sure if the difference it’s actually notable.
I NEED THAT MINI IPHONE
You can't shoot with an iPhone a pro things because "pro filmmaking" its another level and another technics and another settings and another workflow and.. and.. and... A lot of things . Yes a good tool to practice photography and even videography for begginers or vlogers and make a good shots for IDdown and daily use but not for a real filmmaker studied his entire life about tools and cameras technics that im shur you v never tried before, not for a Hollywood movies who spent billion's on cameras stuff cause when you say pro you need to know what does pro mean you know . Filmmaking area isn't for anyone sorry.

@Samuel Manny I'm talking about image quality here and not about how much the story and moments are valuable, it's from a technical side . And yeh I can't use iphone 12pro max and even pro 15 max in next years in big projects cause it's another workflow who needs a lot of tools and settings inside that a smartphone can never reach it ! 10 bit and HDR aren't enough sony phones had it a long time ago in it's phones. Even the iPhone evaluate other big companies like Arri and Red will always be on the top with it's complex and advanced tech. For capturing everyday moments and vlogging than yeh a good tool for that.

You're experiencing existential problem since what's once was exclusive to people like you becomes mainstream to ordinary people. Creativity, Moments captured and great stoies that touches people are far more important than high end photos and videos.

The new camera specs do sound pretty impressive, and iPhones have had really great video the past few years. however, we all know Apple's "Shot on iPhone" videos will have another $2,000 worth of kit attached onto it as usual. Google really needs to step up their game too or they're gonna get surpassed in still photo quality, they've been using the same main sensor for three years now.

the recent shot on iphone video only had a stabiliser
Personally, I think shooting on an iPhone is more of a creative choice, more than anything. It's like choosing between film or digital; there is a creative choice to be made when choosing to shoot on such a camera with such specific, certain qualities to it, and working with it's creative limitations to make the most out of it.

@Computer Clan but why do we have to pick one over the other? I would pay at least the cost of the 12 pro max for pro max features in a “12 mini” form factor, it’s quite frustrating. Why does more expensive have to mean bigger? I don’t care if it’s got a weak battery; I have so many chargers and spare batteries and what not, I just want the best features in the smallest package! (Remember when having the smallest cell phone was a selling point/prestige feature? Let’s get that back)
