StarScope Monocular is a SCAM! (Here's Why) - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk

Sains & Teknologi

The StarScope Monocular telescope attaches to your iPhone and claims to be "like a $4,000 DSLR (camera)." But for only $48, it seems too good to be true, right? That's because it is a scam. Here's why…

StarScope Monocular is a SCAM! (Here's Why) - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk
TO CLARIFY, when I was talking about "seeing" Saturn, I meant to say "photograph." Telescope equipment for seeing vs. photographing is different, and costs may vary.

🔊Hey all! Did you know I have a podcast? There's more I wanted to cover on this scam product, but it was difficult to shove it all into one episode without it being too long. So here's the deal! I'd like to talk more about this product (and the behind-the-scenes story of the making of this episode) on my podcast, No Cameras Allowed. So subscribe to it (it's free) and binge the past episodes while you wait for the new ones! Enjoy! anchor.fm/computerclan

After running across your channel and seeing this, it had already been almost a month since I ordered the product, which gave me a price of $140 if I bought 4, so I did. After seeing this I contacted them and asked when was I going to get my order, and they said they were out of stock. I asked for a refund, they said ok, and asked if I minded explaining why, I said, besides the fact that it's been almost a month, and now your saying your out of stock, I started seeing all the complaints about them on Google. They offered me a10% discount on my order if I didn't cancel it, I said thanks but no, then they offered me a 20% discount, I said thanks but no, then they offered me a 30% discount, I said thanks but no. In the end they said ok, and said it would be a week to 10 days before I get the refund. I said I own two stores of my own and when someone asks me for a refund, that paid by credit card, I refund their money right then, but I said ok, I'll wait ten days before I turn it over to my credit card company, got my refund a few days later. Their customer service folks were very nice, they said they've been in business for 8 years, that seems like a long time. So was anybody happy with what they got?

Great Review. Just one thing, the Gen 1 version is 8x40 not 10x40 so even there the scam is on. I bought one of these thinking (probably like a fool) that I could get 40x60 because that was what it said on the ad. I waited over 2 months for the delivery and then got this thing. Admittedly it's not a bad little 8x40 but that's not what i thought i was buying! They gave me 30% discount because of the delay in delivery really quickly and offered another 20% more when I queried the performance but this seems to be par for the course for complaints (take a look in Trustpilot). Personally I'd never pay £37.99 (+£6.95 delivery) for an 8x10 scope in the first place if i'd have known as this is 'toy' territory. I also had no way of knowing which generation i was buying. So be warned. Starscope is an dubious company at best.....AVOID !

Ad even says "Amy from Texas went on a Kenya safari last May." Yeah, I highly doubt that…..

These are Chinese companies selling this crap, once you buy it good luck trying to return it to China, because you’re spend an insane amount to ship it back to China then the thing is worthless because it doesn’t do what it states, so you just end up keeping it and chalking it up to experience. I know I fell for some crap once before for a jacket that looked nice on the model but when I got it was cheap crap and it wasn’t worth the hassle to send it back so I gave it to Goodwill.

Already bought one! AND the attachment to a smartphone! I purchased as a xmas gift for my husband, the attachment came (in time to go in his stocking)! The actual monocular came after several email contacts with their customer contacts, and, yes, they were very nice and ‘ helpful'. The upshot is that I got the product in March, wrapped it up, a price! So it sits in a drawer...scam, scam, scam. I knew it might be, but I’ve always wanted a monocular for birding, etc. pictures, and the price was the big sales goodie! I’ve subscribed to your site, and WILL LISTEN TO YOU!!! I promise.

When it comes to advertising, they all make claims that just make our heads shake and as for miss spelling thing's and miss pronouncing the names of the things and places, that is to avoid law suits of false advertising and law suits of false working products and this company is not the only ones who are doing that to this day. If you found the information about how advertisers deliberately "miss spell or pronounced thing's" to both fool the public and avoid law suits, please like my comment. Thank you.

I love your revealing the absurdity of this scam product. BUT, I had an ametuer astronomer actually find and show me Saturn at 3:00pm in the afternoon! He located it with the naked eye, (yes it was a "dot" in the sky) and then showed me once he trained his 20 inch twin reflex telescope onto it, it then was about the size of a quarter in the view frame. So yes, you can see Saturn from Earth with the naked eye if your vision is good and it is the right time of year, if only a single dot in the sky.

DLSR is just a misspelling. Bogus products have little or no documentation and misspellings in it and on the packaging frequently. A misspelled word does not necessarily mean a scam or junk item, it is just a sign that something may be wrong when there are many of them.

There is one other thing you didnt cover. IE there is a fundamental limit to angular resolution which is a function of lens diameter. The Reyliegh Limit also depends on wavelength. For visible light 600nm is about the green/yellow transition. Wiki has a page on it but there are far better explanations elsewhere though more complex. www.omnicalculator.com/physics/angular-resolution
