Totally agree with your conclusions here Ken. The BMPCC6k is a great camera. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max looks great too - But each have their now strengths and weaknesses. - Least of which is "do I really want to take my new hotness BM camera out in the rain?" ;)

0:57 its F*king FAIR - you sell it under PRO badge, that means you are competing in the PRO ring... I got fed with all these advertisements trying to openly trick people... 3:20 - HDR this HDR that, but the reality is that there is hardly any difference nowadays, since modern sensors already are capable of pushing those values to HDR standard. It just became of one the post processing filters. Rather to the days when it actually was true HDR. What we called HDR back in the days was merging at least 3 differently exposed images in to one to increase the DR. Nowadays the same results can be achieved simply from one frame... 7:30 - nope, too bad, that`s why the phone has 3 cameras, one is taking an image of the person, the other is taking out of focus image of the same scene, then it blends those two and that`s how its done. But there is the problem, with the DSLR or mirrorless cameras, a photographer controls the amount of blur manually, by increasing distance or closing aperture or even focusing at different point of the subject. On the phone however, the backgrounds are made up using automatic features. Also there is the issue with bokeh deepness, the blur has to be gradual depending on the background behind the subject, the closer objects will look less blurred than the further ones. On the phones however, the whole background is blurred evenly and you can not distinguish which objects are closer to the subjects or and which objects are further away. This greatly effects the quality of so called 3D pop effect, that depends on the sensor size and also on the lenses used. In camera apps only merge two images together to try and mimic the effect of what really suppose to be a good bokeh.

He is talking rubbish. HDR is with 10 bit 422 and Full hd footage possible.

This is all nice but I gotta stick to my LG g8x and LG v40.

At the end of the day, the cameras on most modern mobile phones are fantastic. Ideal for casual and even SOME prosumer use! But it's like cars. But it doesn't compare to a device that is built, from the ground up, with the sole purpose of photography. It's like a car, yeah, Kyle's Subaru CAN be built to go 200mph, but it won't feel as good as a Lamborghini, Porsche, or Ferrari as those cars were engineered to do that kinda thing all day long, from the factory.

What happened to you not able to leave your lair?

No mention of the DOF MK2 adapter? You can get that real depth of field or change lenses on the iPhone with it.

Anyone can push a shutter button, that doesn't make you a pro. And did I say I was a professional photographer? Am I the one saying it? Well? At least I know more than you, that I can tell. I clearly mentioned the product, it's not my fault that you lack in doing some basic research. Even after you said you searched it, you still failed to understand it and insisted at calling it a "mount". A mount, huh? Even after you described it I can tell you have no clue on what you're saying. The product does exactly what I mentioned, you just didn't want to believe it. You wanted to be that guy to say "It's not real. I know more than you". Of course, when you can't win an argument, just try to quote me, then try to sound intellect as if you owned it. Go play with your GoPro. SMH.

@Al P Dude, its just an adapter that enables you to attach a real lens to a smartphone. That's why I didnt know what it was, because Its a bloody lens adapter/mount. Nobody calls glass based lens adapters for old manual lenses "DOF adapters". I am a professional photographer with 2 full frame bodies and plenty of fast, professional grade lenses. Why would I even think of using gimmick like this?

I do have a real camera, but that wasn't my point of the comment. Have you even tried it? Oh, that's right, you haven't because you didn't know what it was to begin with.

Zoom H4n is not super high quality. Its preamps are super noisy

Many here have recognized what I was explaining to my wife recently. It used to be that cell phones had cameras. With the advent of the 12 Pro Max, it's the first camera that has a cell phone.

When will a smartphone be renamed as its no longer a phone which we make phonecalls on. Maybe the Apple iPhone13 will remove the phone functionality. Smartblock tm. Cameras will take up the loss and become cameras that can take phone calls. Now my new Kettle now has a simcard slot an 5G connectivity.... it can boil water and also be a handset with the pour spout to earpiece and the on off trigger the mic. Just put it against the side of your face.

Awesome review. Just curious: why when discussing HDR did you mention shooting in rec709? BRaw can almost reach those ranges... really close.

Great video man! Enjoyed it a lot. Sony cameras offer built-in HLG recording like the iPhone, and I feel it's a totally seamless HDR workflow for semi-professionals when you have a Sony mirrorless as A-Cam and iPhone as B-Cam

Great videos Ken. I got a question for you. Any recommendations on external audio support for iPad Pro (2020) and/or iPhone 12 Pro Max? If things get back to normal, I would like to add better audio for recording high school band field shows. I normally record the field show from the highest point in the bleachers and would like to not record people’s voices. Thanks

Its a small upgrade from the 11 but no where near a cinema camera or even a descent mirrorless which is expected but is an amazing pocket camera for video. Photo quality is where iPhones really excel. I do appreciate the colour science in the skin tones with the 12. However with that said 99% of users will be blown away with an iPhone camera and have no need for a Blackmagic or otherwise. Average person couldn’t be able to tell likely.

Make sure your lens is clean for best phone results

Good balanced episode. However big sensors can’t compete with the huge depth of field of small sensors. Food pictures in dimly lit restaurants being a good example.

I think the 12 pro Max does 6 meters for 30 minutes

Censorship stabilization -- based on censors? Where do they live, in the US or China? Are they the same censors that you see on Facebook or Twitter? :p

2:15 - "Censor_SHIP_ stabilization"? :-D

1:45 - The only problem with sensor stabilization over optical stabilization is that, as you can see in your example, the "overall picture" may be stable, but you can see the details blur every so often. With optical, the details won't blur, the whole picture will bump slightly - which can be edited out in post by cropping in slightly to give "wiggle room" (literally) for the stable part of the image.

@ooopepper Not well - but it boils down to the fact that when only the sensor is moving, the light is still "bouncing" in the lens, producing the motion blur bits. When the lens is what is stabilized, the motion blur doesn't transfer to the sensor. Yes, it's not as effective in "whole frame stabilization", but it produces less "sudden short bursts of blur".

Nice video, thanks. You’d think I’d remember at least some of the 2-semesters during university when I took photography as electives, but nope. lol. Anyway, ordered my iPhone 12 Pro on October 27th and still waiting!? Apparently, only four places in Canada where they can come from and the Chinese are an issue with the new iPhones I’m hearing? The true test for ME is at concerts, something I guess we all don’t need to be worried about for awhile! My iPhone’s camera really sucks with blue & red stage lighting! Lots of bleedthrough and crappy photos overall at concerts. I hope the camera on the Pro is better for this should gigs ever happen again!?

Your 6K can't export compressed video in HDR, but it can shoot RAW and then you can process that through Resolve to get whatever compressed video format you want. So saying the 6K can't shoot HDR isn't entirely accurate, it just doesn't support recording crunchy HDR.

@Computer Clan Okay, that wasn't what I was taking away from the segment. Transfer functions are only really needed to compress the color space to fit the container anyway. I don't see it as a fault in the BMCC 6K that it doesn't have an X-log profile, but rather they simply chose a more robust method. AFAIK, Canon and Sony needed external 4:2:2 recorders to do extended dynamic range because they didn't record 10bit 4:2:2 internally. Is Apple recording in 10bit 4:2:2 or just relying on a compression/decompression transfer function?

I want to make music videos and take some nice photos too, had the iPhone XS before and it was perfect for this but it got stolen this summer which sucked a big one! :/ so I’m looking at the 12 pro and pro max... just don’t know if the bigger phone is worth the extra cash? Awesome videos by the way :))

Stabilizer is great, but the photo quality doesn't improve very much.

Although it got "Pro" in the name, it's still a ordinary people's pro device, rather than the Pro's pro

Would have loved to get the pro or pro max but my budget would only allow for a regular 12. I use mine for my videos and even without the extra bells and whistles of the pro models I find it does an amazing job. I’m no professional but I’ve learned to use what I have and can afford to share my videos and passion on retro and new tech.

Image quality is absolutely dreadful on a mobile when you compare it to a proper camera 📸....
