Surface Duo Review - Bad Software, Good Hardware - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk

Sains & Teknologi

Microsoft Surface Duo is a dual-screen phone… erm… tablet… phablet! It's beautiful, thin, and light, but at $1,400, is it worth it? Let's find out, and enjoy all the bugs that happened, too. Wink.

You should review some knockoff mobile phones from China, there are so many scam products, I even found a fake knockoff (that looked absolutely identical) of a legit Chinese brand (Meizu) that was itself started as a iPhone fake knockoff company. It was like coming full circle or like a how a Chinese knockoff company knows they have made it when another Chinese knockoff company tries to ape their product

Thanks for the fair review! Although I absolutely LOVE my DUO, I Also know it's not for everyone. This phone is my daily driver and have had it for over 2 weeks. It does need getting used. My find is that people need to be patient and adapt to it.. Not expecting it to adapt to the user. Also, I noticed your C64! Awesome! Have you played around with any Amiga products? They were one of the first to use TRUE multitasking, along with Apple (and I believe the Atari computer.. Short lived). THANKS AGAIN!!

This sucks... I have not used any magnetic charger, have treated the phone with delicate and gentle care. And two days ago, I noticed the crack on my USB port, very thin but it's there and starting to grow. I called Microsoft and sadly since I bought with BestBuy, I won't be getting my money back, only a brand new replacement... OK woo-hoo... Not so much, I talked to bestbuy and my 13DAY WARRANTY, yes, 13!!!! Already expired obviously. So no. Money back from then and not even a replacement. I'm wondering, owners with this hardware problem is going to be enormous, does anybody thinks that MAYBE Microsoft will be making a nationwide recall??? Samsung did with the foldable at one point. When I get my new Surface Duo I will be selling it instead of giving a try again. I already purchased my new phone, a Oneplus 8 Pro, before the Surface Duo I had a 1+7Pro and I am excited to go back to them.

First generation device or not, those software bugs scream of a bad job. Given that this was going to run the Windows NT kernel for the longest time, I can't imagine the Android version has had as long a development cycle.

This sounds like a bit more on hardware design flaws and some poor OS mods to the base Android OS by Microsoft. Future firmware updates should hopefully remedy some of those flaws with the OS... Definitely still what I would consider as prototype stage. Agreeing that they have a good idea, but quite a ways to go.

Nah I don‘t know... even though I can‘t manage to like these foldable phablets, Samsung imo has the better approach . After some time, I would really get annoyed by the fact that you have to unfold it to have a screen at all, instead of just pressing a button or tapping on the screen to start interacting with it...

I think it should be just a little thinner, what would be really cool though is a small front panel screen, only a quarter the size with low-ish resolution would work fine but time, camera and message function and sapphire, so it's super scratch resistant.

Great phone and the best device not a phone ever! People just don't know what this device is that's the confusion, other reviews are different but I know that some are good and some are bad just like any other first gen devices. My iPhone 6 was horrible! The software sucked eggs, but I didn't say all iPhone 6's were bad because there were good ones and bad ones. Yes the DUO needs updating but it'll get there, Apple's first gens sucked and so did Googles, Samsung etc...

Microsoft tends not to sustain product lines that are not profitable. So a bad 1.0 release means a 2.0 release may never come. Additionally, Microsoft has a very, very weak customer feedback loop and I do not trust them to hear users or implement their suggestions. For perspective, many basic feature requests for OneDrive -- requests that Microsoft has acknowledged and accepted -- languish for an average of around five years. And this is for one of their flagship product lines. TLDR: This thing is DOA.

As an LG V50 owner, i'm very familiar with the format and it's interesting to see how much refinement this has over my phone in terms of the dual screen functionality and efficiency. Now I bought the phone mostly because of other features and to me the dual screen thing was just gonna be a cool gimmick but after having had it for 3 months I can happily say i've actually used the feature quite a lot to the point that i've found it to be very useful. Though very clearly to me the V50 is far superior in terms of being an actual phone.

9:34 EASY FIX😁.... Keep the Camera App icon on the left screen that way when you flip the camera around on the Right side the camera will be already ready for a Quick picture. This is a brand new form factor so it will take a lot of new muscle memory to get used to it but it's doable after a while. Microsoft has been working on this for years. There’s been patents and concepts around that look a lot like this final product. There’s an article that just came out on Windows Central detailing how Windows looked on the Duo before they switched it over to Android (back when it had it’s Andromeda code name). Microsoft’s App Store aside, I think Windows would have been a better fit. An optimized OS with continuum could have easily replaced my phone, tablet and desktop. Also with the camera thing, I read somewhere you can just double tap the off the screen to switch it as the main focused display. Does that work when the camera is open?
