Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures - M1 MacBook Air is Faster Than You Think!
UPDATE: I have been informed that I was not holding a PowerBook 100 at the end, like I accidentally claimed. Yep! It's a 165c. The sad thing is… I actually HAVE a 100, but I guess I didn't check close enough when I went on camera. Oops.

@Computer Clan You didn’t grant permission for the mic on GarageBand, that’s why it didn’t respond...
I love the PowerBook! But yes, I have the MacBook Air M1 8GB in the cart right now, but think I should just bite the proverbial bullet and get it. My 13" Late 2011 MBP has served me well, and still does, but it is starting to show its age, just a bit, like me.
Woow... that "eyeglasses" 😎
i love how rhe dock is in rainbow order that makes me so happy
What about linux? Is it fast only for mac os?
Does the SSD wear out over time because if I get one I don’t plan to buy another laptop in the next 7-8 years.
1:19 no I saw the ''love" sign on the mac lol😂😂
Stupid SSD killer with very ugly OS.
Thanks for sharing. 😉👌🏼

8:19 thats definetly a good deal
9:32 "Showtofop" sir i believe you said it backwards
Custom M1 chip running 10.6
When MacBooks hit a normal, reasonable price I'll consider buying it
love the content 😂
The MacBook air be like: I am speed
I got the 16gb. Because boi do I multitask. That being said with everything i do right now would work fine on 8gb but I plan to keep this badboi for 5 years. Worth the upgrade if you're a power user who also will keep the device for sometime.

As a guy who is using a 6.5-year-old currently-Linux laptop with 8GB RAM just fine, this M1 Macbook Air is too good
Me looking at Krazy Ken: So... When is DeeDee gonna come out? 😂😂😂
A system with Enough of ram be like: Meh, I use 16 gigs of swap anyway, not seeing any problems here, hehe

13:13 Its actually 4.43 gigs of swap. Anyway, 16 gigs of ram today is just barely enough for me at least
Great video. Thanks.
im gonna buy it
How many tabs can you put in the m1 ChIp cause you did that before

But only with the old ones
Where is the Mac Mini Episode?
My friend who works in the semi conductor industry, once told me the processor you see now, has been developed 5 years ago. M1 has been the product of meticulous planning ever since the first 64bit A series came out. This is why ever since then, everyone has been playing catch up with Apple. Dropping the M1 is a very big surprise, because the others have just got past half of what M1 can do on the ARM architecture.

For them to drop this now too early means they have something bigger in 5 years time.
The M1 Mac Mini is actually faster in write and read speeds, I mean that only makes sense the M1 in the air is more optimized for less performance for more battery but still that is very fast.
very clean
Oh, is that you, Dr. Octavious?
GarageBand: Can I have the microphone? macOS: Lemme think about it. . no. Now close, I have more important apps to give the mic to.
Is that a baby face on a man's body??

Yes
Ok, I gotta admit, Apple finally released a product I'd actually consider buying. Let's wait until Windows works natively, then it'll be a serious contender for my next general use computer. I'll still keep my gaming PC, though.
interesting, M1 not doing so well in video editing iddown.info/the/i22We9if1LbDjsk/video.html I was surprised by the comparison to the Dell XPS 17, which is an i7 intel. As compared, the Dell was a $3000 intel and the M1 was a $2300 16GB RAM MBP. In Premiere Pro it took M1 28:19 mins to complete but the Dell only took 10:51 mins. And for M1 optimized Davinci Resolve 17, the M1 took 15:56 mins to complete and the Dell took 15:16 mins to complete the same task. How can Intel perform just like the M1? I thought the M1 is supposed to be several times faster than the intel? It is all too confusing. I wish it was just simple and the M1 outperformed everything
Is truth that If your using the MacBook that uses the M1 chip it will support the 5G network on the device indeed Looking into my system it shows that the M1 chip does support the 5G service? Can someone answer me Please
Nobody: "OKAY SO"
Can someone tell me where I can get his desktop wallpaper? Thx
hahaha its funny im watching this video from my macbook air m1, GREAT MACHINE!
Ah yes Shotophop
9:32 What? Shotofub? Where did you get the software? 🤣😂
Hey why don't you try out ibuntu os , it is far better then pear os , you can get it at ibuntuos.com , believe me you will be impressed it after you try it out and you will forget pear os. All the problems that you have with pear os is not here in ibuntu . Please inform me if you want more information about it or if you want to Review it . You will love it and maybe use it as your main driver believe me.
how much did this laptop cost?
Is that Krazy Ken or Dr. C?
My 2015 MacBook Pro was really struggling with 2 external monitors, couple of apps open and a few chrome tabs and video calls at the same time... Ive gone for a 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro 8gb.... Do you it can handle that?
It does seem like 8 GB of RAM isn't enough for what you were asking of it. The system was reporting 6 GB of active ram usage but it also said 4 GB of swap was in use
This is very good video. I saw a lot of video discussing about software compatibility issue. Error messages while loading app through Rosetta2. It seems like it’s definitely good stuff on this m1 laptop. Looking forward to get one on my next laptop refresh. Thanks for the video. It’s very good testing. 🙂

HO. LY. SHIT! That M1 does not mess around!
I wonder when Apple will ditch the Intel Chip on all or their larger computers ?
review by Doc Ock
What do you think Apple's high-end desktop chips will look like? A lot of the performance and efficiency of this M1 chip comes from the on-package memory. Having ultra fast, low power memory on-package not only means data can be accessed much faster but it also requires a lot less power to do this compared to normal DIMMs of DDR4, the only issue is it's relatively expensive, especially when you need a lot. I think the entire Apple performance philosophy will rely on this design, so I could see there being a 32GB, 64GB and 128GB version of the CPUs for the high end desktops. Although at $200 per 8GB that would mean a 128GB chip would cost $3200 in RAM alone and that's using the much cheaper DDR4L when I believe they might (should) move to HBM. There is a chance they will still max out at 16GB or maybe up to 32GB of on-package memory, then rely on having a secondary slower 'normal' RAM option, maybe DDR5 depending when these come out, that can be configured to huge capacities at slightly more palatable prices. But my money would be on Apple producing a monster chip (similar in design to the Fujitsu A64FX chip) with something like 128GB of ultra fast HBM, 8 layers giving around 4TB/s of bandwidth, to be used as the unified memory for the whole chip which is then directly connected to a PCIE 5 'hyper-drive' SSD over 16 or more lanes. These could actually be very fast, offering up to 128GB/s on PCIE-5 (over 16 lanes). Also PCIE-6 isn't that far off, probably 2023 which doubles this again to 256GB/s. These speeds are actually faster than 8 channels of fast DDR4 and you can make these drives much larger and cheaper! We really could see the death of normal DDR memory on DIMM with a move to ultra fast on-die / on-package system memory plus ultra fast SSDs. Latency might be an issue but a small price to pay for the overall massive performance boost we would see from a shift to system designs like this. As ever the main enemy on monster chips is heat but ARM architectures have a massive advantage here over x86 plus switching to HBM rather than DDR will help a fair bit too. I could see the top end Mac Pro Chip in 2021 looking something like this: 32 core CPU (all high performance Firestorm cores) 128 core GPU 128 core Neural Engine 128GB HBM Built on TSMC's 5nm+ (it's too early for 4nm or 3nm) Price: ~$15-20k

such a waste of time of an os. this is just bootable spyware
hows that spyware going for you? lol, mac os sends all your stuff to apple.

@Dylaila I never said anything about Firefox 🤣🤣🤣 that's just as bad
Lol I'm use windows and intel
I didn’t even wait for my M1 Mac to arrive before selling my i7 Mac second hand. M1 is so good that it’s driving Intel Mac prices into the ground at warp speed. The G4 Cube is a trophy idolized by many; an Intel Mac is not.
I am so much ready for the 16" apple silicon by now
It's impressive, however, the unified memory gives you speed on GPU stuff because you avoid copying stuff back and forth. If you have an entry level Intel Mac,, 8GB are not real because the video memory is stolen from the main memory, so the 8GB could become 6.5GB (the about panel tells you the video card can use up to 1.5GB), so, the M1 chip will not reserve part of your ram because it will use the same memory for the CPU and GPU (hopefully, not a potential security risk there), so the user win up to 1.5GB, which is not few. On the other side bigger Macs win the ability to use a discrete GPU with it own RAM, however every intel Mac comes with the integrated GPU too... The question is, if I force the use of the discrete GPU, I'll gain precious RAM because the internal GPU will not be use? Awesome work Ken, thanks.
Great review Ken, the M1 is an amazing chip. Unfortunately in Australia Apple makes it really hard to recommend, unless you are already in the ecosystem. For the price of the same air, you can get a 6-8 core Ryzen 4000 based laptop with more ram and storage. The only drop is the 1080p screen compared to the 1600p on the Mac. Once you spend $600 to increase RAM and SSD to 16GB and 512GB, then you can get any premium laptop you want. I would personally love a mini to tinker with but can’t justify the price for those base specs.
sucks
Hey, is this base line M1 Mac enough for iOS development? Or should I upgrade to 16Gb? I'm going to buy it soon.
Aryzen Inniriea

I’m currently using Unity on a Mac Mini base and 8 gb is enough
That's literally a box of dosghit wrapped in aluminium.
The thing with RAM is that ram usage builds up over time, so you gotta go with it as a daily driver to see if that amount of ram is enough.
Well, I have one thing to say: Good job Apple! You can count me impressed!
Dr. Krazy Octavius :D
Dude what is this dimension? This is what a tech review is supposed to be
Hmm
I'm hitting around 80GB of usage date to day. anything below 64gb feels wrong now. No matter how optimized is a app on a Mac if you need to run a vm with 32gb ram or loading a lot of raw footage in ram simply you don't have the option making it less appealing
Each time I see the new Macbook Air with M1 in a stress test I keep being surprised. This is not the evolution of the notebook: this is its revolution
No one: Ken: SHOTOPHOP!
Why didn’t you open a few chrome tabs
Thank you for actually doing testing that a normal person would do. 99% of the reviews for M1 are “We ran Final Cut Pro export. And then we did Cinebench.” What about using R to crunch 5GB of data? What about a 500MB VLOOKUP Excel file? What about opening scrolling through a 10,000 message email inbox? What about running PyTorch? Stuff that data scientists and number crunchers need. It’s like no reviewer have even heard of any of this shit. Thanks for making an effort!

bro JUST first time on your channel, your tests are what i was looking for. Great performance for the air, well done apple
AAA!!! Sorry but the stiched photo was only 69,83 megapixel... not 750 megapixel! You can see your self on Photoshop 18031x3873 px... and there were only jpg... try again with 38 hdr raw file (.dng) in Lightroom with braketing (three photos per each with three different exposure), for a total of 114 raw phots, then could be a real test. I'm doing it with a 10 years old desktop windows pc!!! It works perfectly too.
I think Apple fanboys are disconnected from reality... almost any PC is at least 2 times faster than your "iMac" for a 1/3 of the price...

@Dylaila oh! I would love to hear how much that 5k display adds something to performance...

Almost any PC? And 2 times faster... at what? A “fanboy” can’t give credit where due, and is blinded by bias. Each system has its particular use case. My gaming PC can handle performance intensive programs much better than my Macs(Intel based), but my Macs are much more stable, quick and convenient for daily work. Though my M1 Mac Mini, now handles almost everything my PCs and Intel Macs could.
This juat proves how much of a sinking ship intel is atm, with the new ryzen processors and now these ARM cpu's by apple the future only looks brighter
Don't feel bad about switching out the Pro Max. I'm about to order a mini.
good by intel
GarageBand also doesn’t work on my QEMU hackintosh; it crashes when I try to create a project
good stuff. liked and subscribed!!

Hi, would you be able to see if M1 does well F@H at all. As no 1 did that on YT Thank you
I don't care much for Apple, really, but I feel like these machines are a good showcase for ARM to take a giant leap into the desktop PC market.
This MacBook doesn’t have a single fan but he’s cool 😎
I want a video about the Mac mini!
my brain broke when you said shotophop
these goggle are hilarious
My current laptop already chokes after opening 5 tabs in Edge... I'm contemplating whether or not I should get a 512Gb Air or a 256Gb Pro ;-;

What sort of things are you gonna do on it?
Why is Dr. Nefario reviewing a Macbook Air?
What if you have a Steam account with games for Mac??
I went with the base model M1 Mac Mini the Performance is 🔥🔥🔥
I grabbed the MacBook Pro M1, and while it does have a fan in it, I haven't heard it once. This thing doesn't seem to heat up at all. For someone like me that also uses laptops in places that can possibly kill them, like sitting on a bed while playing video, this is the perfect machine. Not only does it not heat up naturally, but it's super-efficient with decoding video, so it doesn't have to work that hard to do much of anything. Even 4K is buttery smooth! (My MacBook Retina 2013 chugs with 4K and the fan kicks on relatively quickly.)
