I'm a millennial who enjoys watching short videos on his phone. I did that when I took public transports daily prior to forced teleworking. I still do this in my bed before sleeping or when I don't get up as soon as I wake up. (Sorry guy from @Some More News, but you were totally off the mark in your rant about that part of the formula.) So, I could have been a Quibi user if I didn't discover that yesterday while watching videos about its failure. However, the pricing would have been a big no for me. Paying for a streaming service and having ads? Really? On the Internet, you pay or you get ads, not both. Also, the without-ad price sounds too high for short content, even if this is way more produced than IDdown content. It would have work for me if it had been integrated into another streaming service. It would have been the "quibi" section on Netflix, Amazon Prime or local service. The turnstyle technology would have been a specificity of that section, not the flagship of a whole service. Within the years, they would have found a nice use of that turnstyle thing or simply drop off. I think Quibi as a stand-alone service was a lethal mistake. Being part of something bigger and already established would have given them the leeway to experiment and take their time to craft some stuff. Another obvious problem is how much all of that was forced. That's like the Google+ of streaming services, but worse since they put so much money in that. Speaking of money. That was a really bad idea to take nearly 2 billion dollars to target only one generation of viewers. They should have gone generalistic. My father would have been a perfect viewer for that remake of The Fugitive series. He grew up with that show and enjoyed the 90's move with Harrison Ford. He would have liked to watch that on his laptop before going to bed. But as you pointed out, @Computer Clan, laptop ≠ turnstyle technology. That's what happens when you force too much something and put crippling constraints on it.
How did the co-founder of Shrek screw up this much?
Where did all that money go? If it were me, I'd start small to see if there was any interest. These people packaged it like a blockbuster movie with all the wrong priorities: let's get big names, let's advertise, let's get investors, let's buy all the hardware. Um, shouldn't we see if anybody cares first? No, we have a big concept, they will have to care!
It's funny that iOS allows you to take a black screenshot, Android just doesn't let you take one.
I was wondering why I stopped hearing about it. It didn't explain at all what it was in the ads and it would be a good alternative to this platform but you'd have to have people move there or out stuff there too, and tho it is nice to have short videos, esp. when this launched, the whole world had time on their hands and were losing income... Plus the name was dumb, note to developers
it's money laundry, they looking for losing money not for profit
I think Whitman and Katzenberg bamboozled themselves with Board room meeting buzzwords like multi-aspect ratio high production value mobile-only streaming service. Nobody knew what Quibi was because _they_ didn’t know.
That's a pity that tech sounds fantastic.
So quibi had their own dedicated device just for their service? That could have led to its demise too.
i can't tell you how much i expected this to be another addition to the google graveyard, but i guess they had their hands full with stadia at the time.
they blew it all on the logo
Sounds like a Kickstarter
9:15 Didn't you just say in your last video, "...reviews should be ignored."
Why would people pay for sub par high production value content. When you can get fantastic low production value content for free already.
I'll be honest, I just don't think it was a good idea from the start. I don't see how it got so much investment funding.
Didn't Whatsername run for president as a Republican in 2016? And lost to the Drumph in the primaries.
dont abbreviate if you dont save syllables ... wtf
I never heard about this until it already shut down. Didn’t hear about it even once. But I feel really good about that.
Hello. I’ve stumbled here and I’m rewatching. Click read more for me would ya mate? I’m an old viewer from the days when the computer clan made Windows Crap Edition parodies. And SPOOF OS. I have found out that if you pause the video and go to 7:15, you will see “A SPOOF OS CONGLOMERATE subsidiary.” Man, I miss the days of Spoof OS. I know comment will never be popular, I’m just simply just putting down stuff I found. But if you make the comment popular, Thank you. And if the @Computer Clan sees this. Heart me I guess? Well, gonna go now. I’ll probably forget about the comment in a year or month. Goodbye, Comment! Time for you to go into the sea of unread comments.
Just saw this video and had a chuckle when it shows a reviews/ratings of this service at... 4.6. 😂
The entire concept of Quibi just... doesn't work. Initially i thought, "Oh it's a failed streaming service. Probably they didn't advertise enough because i didn't even know about it." But then, it's a mobile-exclusive, short 10-minute content based streaming service and I already knew why it failed. Most of the time if you want 10 minutes worth of content, guess what? IDdown. 10 minutes is *not* the right amount to put quality content in it. Most shows that I like are either a novel/manga adaptation or a very long running huge and connecting series like what Marvel did, and I'm sure there's a lot of people who have the same idea as I did. Quibi failed because they fail to see what phones are to most of the people. It's not a shrinked TV. It's not a shrinked gaming PC (although some people do consider them). It's more of a quick and simple, communication and social device. People only watch IDdown and use Spotify there. The flip thing is redundant, because who ever actually flip their phones if you're watching something, and the fact that it's mobile-exclusive just really pushes a lot of the potential users that would've watched in a TV or PC/Laptop. I'll say it once and I'll say it again, mobile-exclusive anything will barely work except if it's a social media or a communication platform. You will, however get something from mobile-exclusive apps but, most of your users will be in places where people uses their phones a lot like China, India, or Southeast Asia. I live in Southeast Asia and I have never seen a single ad about Quibi.
I never even heard about it
The problem with the claim that the pandemic somehow hurt the sales revenue of Quibi is that every other major streaming service reported an INCREASE in revenue since the pandemic hit.
I thought Quibi was some eBay knock off or dating app... it's sort of like Kohls, what does a Kohl's store have in it.
Really you can’t take screenshots in Netflix, Hulu, etc, I’m gonna have to check that out; it works in IDdown. I remember trying to get a screen capture of a frame of a DVD in Apple DVD player so I could look up what I was seeing because it looked interesting in the end it’s pointless to block screen capture. To get around that it was just a matter of using a different screenshot Utility shocker or better yet VLC has it built right in, Or just do what the normal do take a phone and take a picture of the screen but you can’t do that if you’re using a phone to be a .... never mind. Now I know there was one proof of concept of somebody using screenshots to capture every frame of a movie but that’s not what the actual Pirates are doing, it’s all about supply and demand if you make supply hard to access you increase the demand for the black market. So let’s all have our own different apps and subscription plans.....
Hubris, enough said
So that's why I stopped seeing their terrible ads. I completely forgot what a quibi was and I still really don't care for it.
This is the stupidest thing ever invented.😂 Wtf
Quibi failed because the heads had unrealistic expectations. Everything was fine with the whole concept. But they expected it to be an instant hit. No streaming service has ever been an instant hit in the first year. They should have budgeted for it to last at least 2 years without folding. That, or it was a huge investment scam to say “hey, at least I tried... right guys?”.
Can I just point something out? The rating.... 4.6 stars...
Lol remember the ads about the sex doll show
I thought QuiBi had something to do with wireless charging technology.
Was it just a way to launder 1.75 billion.
why quibi failed: - $4.99 a month with ads
Imagine people turning their tv on it's side.
That was probably not about marketing, but rather about UX. They probably did not researched the uses and validated their solution so well.
I remember seeing so many ads for this.
The fact that they were charging 5 buck for it with ads for 10 minute or less clips is so dumb cause I'd rather just hop on IDdown and do it for free
When I saw this service. I didn’t think it would last. But I went ahead and signed up for a free month, watched a few episodes that day and never used it again. At that point I knew it was going to fail. Who was going to pay for this? Where is the market? Who is the market for this? The name was really dumb. Paying for this and getting commercials? No!!! Paying more money to not get commercials? It was just way too much money. The whole turn the phone thing was just dumb.
100% would have used this, if you were able to connect it to another device like a computer or smart tv, and when rotating your phone, what didn't appear on the phone appeared on the tv, so it would be like you're watching a movie, and you can check your phone to see what the guy is doing on his phone
The turn style wold be cool to have streamed to tv that way you can see both of them if you want or the phone thing you mentioned where you can see whats on the characters phone you could have that there while watching the movie.
bruh they could make an interactive movie for pc and phone
I would say it is an interesting idea but at the end of the day the multiple angle thing is a gimmick no one would really use because when you want to be watching videos you don't want to be doing work holding and rotating your phone. Much like how the controls on WiiUs ZombieU was an interesting fun gimmick at the end of the day it is just that, a gimmick something people think is cool but don't want to bother with outside of screwing around for a few hours.
I still don't get why companies will pigeonhole a product and then advertise it as a feature
Nice to see Krazy Ken isn’t forgetting about SpoofOS
when casting, they couldve had the landscape mode video on the tv and the portrait mode one on the phone.
Why would I want a streaming service where I miss out on stuff because I held my phone the wrong way, that has no notable shows, and is only accessible mobile? And I want short vids, I get them for free on IDdown. Just another project that sounds nice on paper but is really just a Juicero.
The first time I ever heard of it was a BBC article talking about its demise
The cringy ads immediately made me hate this app, the tech is kind of cool but could get annoying fast, sometimes your phone just doesn't detect when you flip it, ya know. Also, no free option is almost certainty a killer.
This channel is garbage becuae of all the music and CRAP ANNOYING editing.
Jumpscare ads definitely had a small but noticeable affect in their downfall
This is such a bad idea, not only it's not "organic" and with content shown according to personal preference like TikTok, it only works with a subscription (which is not bad on itself, but for example, with Netflix you know it has an "X" amount of movies and series that you already liked. But now paying to then know if you like the content is terrible. And, btw, I almost never skip any Computer Clan videos, but I originally skipped this one just because the "Quibi" name is the most uninteresting name I've ever seen (I just came here to watch this after I heard about it in the No Cameras Allowed podcast).
this would only work if IDdown didn't exsist
It was Hollywood trying to copy youtube with paid content. No one was interested in this official Hollywood crap
ok dude not trolling but your confuse me... you have the head of a guy who's probably 60-80'lbs heavier than you... like your neck and shoulders scream I eat salads and work out... but your head yells... BBQ and can you deep fry my butter.
The portrait/landscape things is one of the dumbest irritating content-limiting novelty ideas that would date immediately, and just why ? No wonder Nobody knew what the hell it was.
No screenshots ? No problem, I'll just capture the serial stream at the screen level.
0:07 My reaction to idiots taking vertical videos and photos.
All I remember of quibi when it first came out is "mobile only, that's a dumb idea" and being turned off by the ad with the airplane pilot that didn't want to land so she could watch another quibi, seriously wtf were the marketing team thinking?
I am thinking about petitioning the Australian government for if and when that fund an unknown poisonous animal. To petition them to call it a QUIBI. Just because QUIBI sounds like an Australian poisonous animal.
Blocking screenshots for a media app is stupid. But so is mentioning "iOS, ipados and Marcos" its all CrAPPLE. blocking screenshots does not work on other is, since people actually own their device and can use it for whatever they want
Stocks in Netflix and all other streaming has gone up allot from covid. The pandemic has objectivly helped streaming services. Quibi is just bad. The shows were bad and most importantly. Something no one was asking for.
What was Quibi? It was a temporary tax right off. Never intended to be anything else. It was never designed to succeed.
Yeah, very nice, but your research seams limited to a simple google search... Zune didn’t fail because it was too early... actually it was too late and didn’t have the user base... paying US$5 per month for a 10mins video platform (it wasn’t a streaming service, even they would have streamed) in 2020???? you’re not competing with streaming services, which stream movies or episodes (as you’re limited to 10mins?), so you’re competing with short video services... like IDdown or Tiktok, which don’t charge for the same service and are well established in 2020... just as a user I can tell you why it failed: there was not reason for people like me to sign up for it... and that’s the only reason... nobody will say “oh they did that first”, coz they didn’t... the only reason I can see for all those big labels signing up is, that there was some kind of DRM included in their software...
We would get a lot more done if companies weren’t always threatened with lawsuits
Quibi was really a scam so that Smeg Whitman and Jewffrey Katzenberg could line their pockets one last time.
If it wasn't for these rich guys taken chances investing in new tech then we would still be stuck before the industrial revolution. Its people like that rich guy who help move the world forward.
I dont know if I'm making a mistake as to what he means about screenshotting Netflix but I'm able to screenshot both Netflix menus and movies while they play 🤷♂️
Kevin hart laughed all the way to the bank
My life is easy - no need for twitch or facebook or stuff like that and what do i need from a phone - well a phone, nothing else.
Ive seen two shows on quibi and it was pretty cool.
I didn't know you're an Aggretsuko fan, Ken
It was a good idea! I hope they got out alive! I like companies that try to innovate
I remember seeing Quibi, my reaction was "Why?".
£4.99 for videos and still ads? That’s exactly what I get for free on IDdown...
I didn’t know much about Quibi. I saw the ads on IDdown, got the idea that it was just another streaming service, but I hated the ads. They were annoying, much like any other IDdown ad. “I’m trying to watch the video I chose, why is there an annoying random video in my face?” The ones that count down to a skip button or the 5 second ads aren’t as bad, but still. It’s like popup ads that are either near impossible to find the close button for or that never leave, or the ones that keep coming back. It’s a shame, because some of the shows seemed interesting, but to hear about the app being focused on short clips of tv episodes or clip after clip of movies, that’s just strange. It’s annoying enough that I can’t just sit down and watch a whole story of a tv series, rather than having it broken into episodic bites. Although, sitting down for 2 or 3 hours in one thing, I wouldn’t want to be sitting and watching a movie for 100 hours straight, non stop. Maybe the episodic approach is best for longer stories that need the time to flesh out the characters and plot. The turnstile approach is a strange one. It sounds frustrating and annoying. Either watching the story or whatever else the episode has attached. Why not do that in the editing. Widescreen is a thing. Why not give us the POV of the phone on the side of the screen next to the rest of the shot when it’s relevant. The different camera angle idea is interesting though. Having the shot dynamically change with the orientation of the phone. But why?
Honestly quibi kinda seems like an idea that could work... IDdown already kinda does it but short shows formatted for phones does seem like something other than that. Quibi may have just failed by being first. Mark my words - by 2030 that will be here. Unless something beyond smartphones takes hold.... maybe watches will be how we watch movies by then.
Hey guys, there was news that Quibi will be available on the Roku Channel. Spread the news.
Why the slights on PC (DOS) & Android? iSheep are mental slaves too.
And Quibi content is gonna be on Roku for free on their own Roku Channel.
I find it ironic when you are discussing Quibi limiting platforms then your yourself saying "watching it on your tv or laptop." Um sorry but last I checked there are something called PC or personal computers I.E. computer towers with a keyboard, monitor and mouse hooked up to it and sometimes with additional technology, plus I am sure there are other platforms neither of us have thought of like a microwave tv voiced by glados or something else just as wild...wait...what kind of mushrooms were those I ate earlier?
I hated it just for its dumb name.
Oh the zune what a mess that was
A dude named Sage.......🤣😂
I liked quibi for it's content, but not the format. Hopefully people will save the content. The All-Celebrity low production of Princess Bride was just awesome. Quibi WAS NOT short form. It was always a 30 minute story chopped into three ten-minute segments. There was one show that had an existing fan base, Punk'd. I got the subscription free with T-Mobile. It wasn't entirely mobile only with Samsung DeX and even offered a full experience with the content running in full screen and anything missed from portrait mode showed on the side. I would LOVE to see most of the shows and short films brought to other platforms. Netflix had better start buying these from the hole they are buried in. The comedies on this format were worth trying to save quibi. Netflix seriously needs to buy "Dummy", since they'd make a ton of money off it.
the biggest problem in my opinion is their hubris like newtv?come on
I love the QuiBi idea. Man, that's damn great
I remember seeing Quibi ads on IDdown and I found them extremely annoying. I just didn't care... at all. If I wanted to watch something other than IDdown, I would go to Netflix or Disney+. In my opinion, Quibi had nothing better to offer. Instead it was invasive and annoying with its dumb name and marketing strategy. "I'll be there in a Quibi". Really?...
Hhhmmm Rating at 4.6.... Suspicious
Why would I pay $4.99 for something that lasts for 10 minutes *and* has ads?
I live in Hungary (Mid-EU) and I don’t remember reading anything about this app. I think their ads didn’t hit some crucial areas, that would be another reason they failed ...
I feel like this tech and concept could work on the future... but as an add-on to an excising service not its own separate thing. This service was too niche and weird on its own but if its added as a feature in Netflix or Disney+ i bet people would love it.
Plus the adds were soooooo effffing stupid.
twitter.com/Roku/status/1347555770464927747 well this aged badly
I don't watch videos on my phone, so Quibi never appealed to me. I was a little interested in their content, but I didn't want to have to use my phone. Once Chromecast support came, I just didn't really care that much.
They also made an event with fortnite and it was hyped up so much, but it was just a cringey prank thing
It was cool different I only used it for two months didn't find enough on it but I did watch that golden arm one about the carpenter an his wife how he cut her arm off due to the tree falling on it was a crazy flick
While I understand they had a few powerhouse big shots beyond this I still cant fathom how they were able to raise 1.75 billion on such questionable idea/product.
I saw a bunch of ads for crappy looking shows that were quibi "exclusives." I wasn't interested.
Great content as always! I was actually excited when I discovered Quibi and the short shows but then I forgot to open the App for a few months and then It shut down! I didn’t even know till I saw your video. Shame. But as you say, goes to show you can have all the money in the world but if it’s not the right idea or it’s executed wrong or it’s just wrong place wrong time it ain’t gonna work!
