No App Store on iPhone? (Steve Jobs' Opposition) - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk

Sains & Teknologi

A few months belated here, but, honestly, as a Windows user, Apple's App Store, the Google Play Store, the Amazon App Store, Linux repositories, Valve's Steam, Epic Games Store, etc., all look like one thing to me - a DRM-enabled bottleneck between me and using the software I want to use in the way I want to use it. I've never liked Apple because they always had a walled garden. When they moved to a BSD clone for OSX and then finally moved off the archaic 68X architecture, I had hoped that there would be interoperation and more cross-platform compatibility without Java; maybe through a Wine clone or the like. But instead, they circled the wagons and OSX is just a vaguely pretty waste of time that gets in between a user and actually doing anything worthwhile. An OS should exist to provide simple common libraries and frameworks to software, to optimize and manage memory, and get out of the way. Anything else is pretty much a waste. The amount of call-home and remote access in the NT Windows builds and the OSX Macs is disgusting. We need simple terminals that do as we tell them, when we tell them, and how we tell them. We absolutely don't need DRM-happy chokepoints. And that's all the various software repositories are.

Computer Clan: App Store, nothing else like it Installer App: Am I joke to you??? Seriously Installer app on the jailbreak scene was out before the App Store, and most reasonably powered feature phones at the time had a Java app store. The App Store wasn't new, it just did a better job of doing it than what was already out there.

I wonder what influence the Open Handset Alliance had in pushing Apple to actually put out an SDK. The OHA, for those who don't know, is where Android originated. And beta versions of the OS with a VM were being released in November 2007. And those beta releases included SDKs and documentation for developing applications for Android, allowing developers to make applications that would be ready for when the first Android phones started hitting the market. But the OHA officially formed on October 10, 2007, and Google already had something in the works before the OHA officially formed, with Google intending for Android to be an open mobile platform with free developer tools readily available. I wonder if something got leaked to Apple around that time that since it was 7 days later, October 17, that Apple announced an iPhone SDK would be released in March 2008, but the first press release from the OHA wasn't released till early November. Jobs might have been warming up to the idea more each time it was brought up, and companies were probably putting more pressure on Apple as well, but the formation of the OHA with their open platform likely told Jobs he no longer had a choice.

The problem with native vs. web apps is so many native apps don't even need to run custom code. Discord runs flawlessly as website and I only use it as such. (I don't really need/want other people to know what I'm doing via rich presence, and I don't need push-to-talk) So many native apps, even on smartphones these days, would run perfectly as websites. Native apps were much more important in the old days when the overhead of a browser would make it inefficient enough to impact the performance of the software. 3D games were often written in low level code like C, and often cleverly used every bit of the system it could. Nowadays, companies want us to basically download an 15th full copy of Chromium that only connects to a single website (like Discord) that are written using inefficient development shortcuts (like Electron). I miss when people actually cared about optimizing their software. Even if I don't miss the REASON they cared; limited system resources.

What's hilarious to me is that I'd say at least 90% of non-game apps are just web apps with a "local app wrapper" around them. Although in the original iPhone OS's incarnation, the fact that you couldn't even add/modify the home screen AT ALL was a bit annoying. Nope, not even "Web clip" icons. The stock icons were all you got. (Which didn't even include the iTunes _Music Store_ at launch - you had to sync your music/videos from a computer, like a heathen iPod!)

I think it's stupid how Electron apps are taking over on desktop, why do we have to run multiple instances of Chromium just because a developer is too lazy to write a native application which is faster, more secure and less bloated? Electron apps are 200+ MB each because Chromium itself is 200 MB or more in size, run horribly slow on anything more than 5 years old, it blows my mind how developers are thinking that web apps are the future.

My guess about Steve Jobs is that he wanted a sure thing. He didn't expect the Appstore to grab over 100 billion in sales in a few years, so he was against it. Only Tim Cook made that gamble possible and Steve rewarded him later by letting him succeed as CEO. Of course, there is much more to it but I think Steve would have killed off the iPhone sooner if Tim had not convinced him otherwise. That's what they did with the iPod Nono's, iPod Sniffles, and other iPod crap Tim did not believe in.

Progressive Web Apps before Progressive Web Apps. Such a shame the idea was scrapped in favor of an app store, it could've meant a more competitive market for different platforms (i.e. Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Nokia, etc. probably wouldn't have died out due to the app gap), had the industry followed Apple's move. And now it's Google and Microsoft that's pioneering web apps while Apple is the one that's holding out.

So the thing about native apps on mobile and Web Apps on the pc is only partially true... even though there are many native apps in the stores it’s way faster to develop hybrid apps which are "glorified WebViews" as well just with some native adapters for iOS and Android... those applications can feel nearly as native as real native applications but they would run on iOS as well as Android which saves tons of development time and therefore cost... this is the main reason, I guess, that there are so many webapplications for mobile out there as well... Of course there are other options as well like react native which tries to use native UI combined with JavaScript as well trying to get cross platform compatibility and a native ui but the hybrid app sector isn’t something to overlook... And another interesting point are PWAs... especially with googles TWAs which are like websites that can be put into the playstore it’s a great way to develop apps for the users that can be updated instantly if they don’t need any native dependencies... I would really like to see something like this on iOS even though I doubt it considering the current policy of Apple regarding the apps on the AppStore
