I Bought a NeXTcube, Now What? - Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures

Sains & Teknologi

So, Krazy Ken bought a NeXTcube. Now what? Today, we're going to open the system up, try out the NeXTstep OS, and we'll even measure the cube to see if the rumors are true-is the height 1 millimeter shorter than the other dimensions? Let's find out…

1mm shorter was probably to save $10 on the build. Then tell people it’s for some really cool reason and they pay even more for the unit.

The NeXT cube was my first introduction to the internet. In late 80s/early 90s I used to go to the NeXT lab in the basement of the Math Sciences building at Purdue and make flyers for my band on the very expensive 300dpi laser printer. And while I did get to use the original WWW app, I spent many more hours browsing university FTP servers around the country, downloading Star Wars TIFFs and other useless stuff as the world wide web was very limited at that point. Going back to Windows and Macs afterwards felt like a major step backward.

I worked for a Swiss investment Bank in London in the early 90s, which committed 100% to NeXT buying 1000s as these machines. They were so committed that IT staff were bonused on the number of objects they created. Then Jobs announced NeXT was over and the CTO was out on his ass.

I was inadvertently very rude to TBL. I went to university at the University of Southampton while he was a professor there. I told him to move off the table I was sitting at as my friend was coming. I only realised who he was about a month later when I watched a TED Talk he gave while introducing the founder of the .com bubble. I was so retrospectively embarrassed 😳

Waiiit... did you say the NeXT machine could output 32bit colour... in the late eighties? Holy cow. I had an amiga 500 at the time which had a palette of 4096 colors... A palette! Even in 92 when I bought my Amiga 1200, first of all it was originally an 020, not an 040 like the NeXT but even in its HAM8 mode you could still only get a max of 24Bit. OK, so the NeXT is closer to the Amiga 4000, but holy sh*t that woulda been powerful when released.

You wouldn´t find a other Computer MB that is that dense back in that era. The reason is simple. Computer is very cost efficent and there for they made it in the cheapest possible way. Specially back then, that was the main reason why laptops was that expensive. Even then, laptop MB was really not even that dense If you look at phones MB back from that era they are even denser.

When you said capable of 32bit colour in the 90's I immediately thought of the C-Amiga 1200, then you said Motorola 68040 and everything clicked into place ha :D I know Amigas used 68000, and 68020 and 68040 were upgrade add-on boards, I have a 68040 accelerator board in my A1200 but Iv misplaced the 8Mb ram chip that went in it arrrrgghh I also remember seeing my first hi-res full colour JPEGS from floppy disks on it, they were stunning for that era on a big CRT tv That Next is something I never heard of but like you say, its immaculate and extremely well put together, and wtf! how many ram slots LOL

crisscross pattern doesnt matter when youre disassembling... also not too important in these cases when assembling. i mean if its an industrial press you have to assemble, then criss and cross it, the pressure you put on the plates of the clutch is important to be balanced, but in a pc case its whatever

When I was a college, I ran into a guy in the Student Union who was from NeXT, who was there to promote and sell product. I had an Apple Quadra 650 and Duo Dock at the time but really wanted one of these. Our music department owned several NeXT workstations for music synthesis. We had a two story performance room with an octagonal sound system that the NeXT workstations powered. I heard sone trippy music. It was awesome. Btw, the 68040 was an awesome CPU, especially at 25 MHz, with the FPU.

I'm 55 this year, from Belgium. Back in the days (1991) I was working in Paris and I remember the first demo of NeXt cube on a Paris computer show. By the way I had a sinclair spectrum as first computer. I lived the rivalry between Jobs and Gates, so every history story wakes up many memories from that crazy time in my life. Back in that time , you had X-windows on Interactive or SCO with the then new revolutionary TCP/IP ethernet networks. NOvell servers. I still have a Toshiba T100LE portable. 1 MEGA internal memory , DOs 3.51, Blue LCD screen, 20 MB (MEGAbyte) Hard Drive. Still remember the "BLAST sliding window" protocol we tried to market to big tech companies. French chauvinism had pushed "Stutel" protocol as standard (nobody knows anymore about it, cause it sucked). I remembered to debug some RNIS (ISDN) modems for ArianeSpace, installing dialing batteries of 30 to 50 IBM PC's with shitty (due to French Telecom) french modems. Man, sweet memories. The nicest one was : we had to install comm's on IBM computers in 300 locations all over France (distribution warehouses). They ordered to their labor to present a "clean PC" (in every location there was compressed air). One young employee did not quite grasp the concept of electricity : hey cleaned the PC with the water hose. ... WHilst under tension, and we were the happy spectator of a beautifull show, lol. oh, sweet memories By the way , french ladies were top ! (still are)
